Author: Ritsuko Hirai
Publisher: Pearson Learning Solutions (2008)
Binding: Hardcover, 969 pages
In First Year Japanese, award-winning Japanese instructor Ritsuko Hirai introduces students to her language through the story of Monica, a college student from Pasadena studying Japanese in Kyoto, Japan. As the chapters progress, students experience daily life with Monica: shopping, ordering food at restaurants, finding an apartment, cooking with friends, going out for movies and to Kabuki theaters, writing letters and diary entries to the family, and much more. The complete First Year Japanese teaching package includes textbook, workbook, CDs, and instructor’s manual. Along with the grammar lessons presented in the textbook, as well as the many activities and exercises, the workbook enhances the newly learned material for students, and the audio CDs recreate situations for students to experience the expressions presented in the text. The workbook contains exercises mainly designed to help students master the reading and writing of the three main components of the Japanese writing system: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Two sets of audio CDs are used with the textbook: the Dialogue and Vocabulary CDs and the Student CDs. The first set is for the dialogue and vocabulary sections of each chapter, and the second is for Dictation and Conversation (called “Dict-A-Conversation”), where students listen and orally perform required tasks, and also write down answers. These can be done in the classroom or as homework, or both. The instructor’s manual contains written narratives of the Student CDs, giving instructors the option of providing students with copies of the Dict-A-Conversation narrative, to check on what they practiced aurally and orally. Taken together, the components of First Year Japanese offer college students an excellent introduction to written and conversational Japanese. Features * Complete teaching package includes textbook, workbook, CDs, and instructor’s manual * Textbook introduces conversational Japanese through the fictional travels of Monica, a U.S. college student in Japan * Workbook exercises help students master the reading and writing of the Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji scripts * Audio CDs cover “Dialogue and Vocabulary” sections of each chapter, and Dictation and Conversation (“Dict-A-Conversation”) tasks, for use either as homework or class work * Instructor’s manual offers printed versions of Dict-A-Conversation narratives for optional classroom use, along with ideas for class activities
